This tale of new friends fighting for survival on the streets of New York was the first and only X-rated feature to win a Best Picture Academy Award. Though tame by today's standards, the film's portrayal of the struggle for existence on the bottom of the urban social order (including a West Texas boy (Jon Voight) having to hustle sex for money) was so shocking to the conservative ratings board that a traditional R rating was deemed too lenient. Dustin Hoffman and John Voight form one of the greatest duo's in the history of cinema, and the bond they form having to lean on each other for survival emerges as an enduring, if heartbreaking, testament to the human spirit.
